A 10-day Sri Lanka itinerary for first-time travellers
A relaxed loop through Sigiriya, the hill country, the south coast and Galle — the version we recommend most often when someone has 10 nights and wants to actually enjoy them.
Most first-time guests ask the same question: "how many days do we need?" Our honest answer is 10 to 14. Less than a week and you're rushing; more than two weeks and you start adding distance for distance's sake. Ten days is the sweet spot.
Here is the route we book most often, with rough drive times in brackets.
Day 1 — Negombo
Land at Bandaranaike, sleep by the lagoon. Don't drive anywhere yet.
Day 2 — Negombo to Sigiriya (3.5h)
Stop at the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala on the way. Sunset at Pidurangala Rock — easier to climb than Sigiriya, and you get the iconic view of Sigiriya.
Day 3 — Sigiriya climb + Dambulla
Be at the gate at 7am to beat the heat and the tour buses. Cave temples at Dambulla in the late morning, pool in the afternoon. We send a chilled towel up with breakfast.
Day 4 — Polonnaruwa cycle tour (1.5h drive)
Half-day on a bike with a guide who actually understands the 12th-century kings. Lunch is rice and curry served on a banana leaf at a village home. Trust us on this one.
Day 5 — Drive to Kandy (3h)
Spice garden stop is optional and a bit touristy — we'll let you decide. Evening Temple of the Sacred Tooth ceremony at 6:30pm is non-negotiable.
Day 6 — Train to Ella
The famous one. Reserve seats well ahead — we do this for you. Three hours of tea country at window-seat eye level. You'll arrive in Ella by mid-afternoon.
Day 7 — Ella
Sunrise at Little Adam's Peak, lazy lunch, walk to Nine Arch Bridge for the 4:30pm train photo, beers at sunset.
Day 8 — Drive to Yala (2.5h)
Half-day game drive in the late afternoon. Leopard chances are real — about 1 in 3 game drives in Block 1.
Day 9 — Yala to Mirissa (2h)
Beach. That's the whole plan. Optional whale boat at dawn if you're there December–April.
Day 10 — Mirissa to Galle (45 minutes)
Galle Fort walk at sunset, dinner inside the ramparts, fly out the next morning.
What we'd skip
- Adam's Peak unless you specifically want the climb (December–April only).
- Colombo unless you have an extra night.
- The Sigiriya–Galle direct drive. It's brutal. Break it.
That's it. If you want the full version with hotels and prices, send us your dates and we'll come back within 24 hours.
