When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has two monsoons that politely take turns. Here is how to pick the right coast for your dates so one rainy week does not ruin a trip.

Sri Lanka is a small island, but it has two distinct monsoons running on opposite schedules. That sounds confusing — it's actually a gift. There is almost always one side of the island that is dry, sunny and ready for you.

The short answer

  • December to March: west and south coasts (Colombo, Galle, Mirissa) and the hill country are at their best.
  • April to September: east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is golden — calm seas, surf, sun.
  • April and September are short transition months. Often gorgeous everywhere, occasionally messy.

So how do we plan around it?

When we draft a route we look at your dates first, then pick the coast that's in season. The Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla) and most of the hill country are fine year-round, just hotter from March to May.

Rough month-by-month

December to February. Peak season for the south. Galle is buzzing, Mirissa is full, the hill country is cool and clear. Book hotels well ahead.

March. Still dry south, hotter inland. Whale watching is excellent off Mirissa.

April. New Year fortnight (April 13–14) is busy and many locals travel — fun but expensive. Either coast works.

May to August. South-west monsoon. East coast is the move — Pasikuda, Trinco, Arugam Bay are all open and beautiful.

September. Brief inter-monsoon. Surprisingly good window with lower prices.

October to early November. Most variable month — short, sharp showers across the island. We tend to recommend hill country, where rain is part of the magic.

November to early December. Things settle in the south. Hotels open back up at slightly softer rates.

Real-life example

A guest emailed us last June asking about a 12-night family trip. We pointed them at the east coast — Pasikuda for beach days, Polonnaruwa for cycling, Yala for a quick safari, and finishing in Kandy. They got eight days of unbroken sun and one cinematic afternoon thunderstorm.

If they had insisted on Mirissa in June, we'd have warned them about the swell. It still has its charm — but the boats stay in the harbour.

Bottom line

Tell us your dates first. We'll pick the coast.
